As yachts become increasingly reliant on advanced technology, the risk of cyber attacks on these high-profile vessels has surged. Cyber criminals are finding more opportunities to exploit the vulnerabilities in motor yachts and superyachts, targeting their sophisticated systems. Cyber Threats in the Maritime Industry
The maritime sector has seen a significant rise in cyber threats over the past few years, especially as yachts have become more interconnected. While attacks on yachts had already risen by 40% before the COVID-19 pandemic, these threats have continued to escalate. As vessels become smarter and integrate more advanced IT systems, the potential risks increase.

With yachts now relying on sophisticated IT systems, they face the same risks as any modern office or home. However, the yachting environment introduces additional challenges, such as rotating crews, time spent in boatyards, and frequent use by charter guests. These factors increase the number of potential vulnerabilities that cyber criminals can exploit.
“The more people who come aboard, the greater the risk of someone unintentionally introducing malware or exploiting security gaps,” explains Hawkins. “Cyber resilience is no longer an option but a necessity.”
New maritime regulations, spearheaded by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), highlight the growing importance of cyber resilience. While the current IMO code applies primarily to vessels over 500 gross tons, all yachts—regardless of size—are at risk. Hawkins adds, “While the regulations currently target larger vessels, we expect that future updates will cover smaller yachts as well. Being proactive and prepared is essential.”

As Hawkins points out, “It’s positive to see the maritime industry catching up with cyber security requirements. Ensuring that yachts remain secure should be a standard practice moving forward.”
